Graphic art flourished in Germany during the Goethe period. Many Classicist artists expressed their personal handwriting more clearly in drawings than in paintings. Among them was Johann Peter von Langer, founding director of the newly established Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. This volume traces his life, his role as academy director and his contacts with the most important thinkers within cultural and intellectual life at the time. The author examines Langer’s graphics in great detail. Today, most of the drawings are found in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich and in the Prints and Drawings Collection of the Princely House of Thurn und Taxis.
Maria Bücklein, Dr. phil., born 1984, studied art history – among other things – and works as an academic intern in the museum department of the Bavarian Administration of State Palaces, Gardens and Lakes.
